THE REAL BUSES
Walter Alexander the Scottish bodybuilder has a long history of producing successful designs. The 'A' type double decker was introduced in the mid 1960's and was originally supplied to Glasgow Corporation, the design employed curved glass and fibre glass panels to improved the vehicles looks.
Although the design was popular with traditional Scottish operators, it was soon to appear in many different fleets across the UK.
The 'A' type under went several design revamps during it's time in production, this externally was most visible around the front and rear panels.
The Atlantean chassis was also commonly combined with the 'A' type bodies and this was the more popular choice particularly with the Scottish operators.
The Falkirk factory continued to offer the 'A' type until the late 1970's when it was finally replaced by the new 'AY' series.
The 'A' type design has now largely been withdrawn from operation with larger operators, although small numbers can still be found operating with smaller concerns.
THE EFE MODELS
The Fleetline Alexander 'A' were introduced into the range during 1997/8. There have only been three new releases since 2000.
EFE can produced three different versions of the body, which basically consists of different lower deck front and rear panel designs. These can be combined with either an open engine bustle, or a version with side shrouds, producing a flush rear side profile. It is in theory therefore possible to produce a total of six model variations, although to date only four have so far been added to the range. The Bradford City Transport model was issue with a 2nd version of the upper deck casting that has a fluted front roof dome, to date this is the only model of an Alexander A type to be issued with this feature, interestingly the Bradford model is also known to exist with the more popular flat front dome.
The body castings can also be combined with the Leyland Atlantean engine bustles to produce six further examples. (see Alexander Atlanteans index)
